“Santa Maria della Salute” by Marina Strijakova, a part of the Architecture collection, depicts a beautiful Venice Roman Catolic church.
This artwork bears an unexpected relationship to our modern trials with the global pandemic. Santa Maria Della Salute is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Venice. A devastating outbreak of the plague in 1630 killed almost a third of the Venice pupulation. As a votive (offering) for deliverance from the ravaging disease, the church was built and consecrated to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church is so symbolic to Venice’s history that its dome became emblematic of the city.
What will be the legacy of human efforts and deliverance from the Covid-19 pandemic?
